This happens sometimes with mail clients such as Thunderbird or Macmail. When you click at the top of the inbox columns, you change the order of messages -- for example if you inadverdently clicked on "Subject" messages would go into alpha order by subject, or if you clicked "date" it would toggle to reverse chronological order. If you click on the date column header once or twice you will revert back to the default of reverse chronological order.
